The rule is:

1) Limited number of Values and
2) Vary Temperature only to get things to recede and pop
3) Keep forcing yourself and hold yourself to points #1 and #2 above.

I did a rough value sketch and premixed the paints as much as I could.

5" x 6", tiny painting, 3 hours Alla Prima. All feed back are welcome.

I like it but wonder about the 'rules' you established for this painting. Is there a reason for them?

As I said, I like it composition-wise but I'm going to be brutally honest here and say that the limited value/temperature changes make for a very bland painting.

The green on the far hills is pretty much the same green as the foreground which makes for a lack of depth. I would think the green on the hills would be much lighter and cooler/bluer and I know you know about these things so that's why I've questioned your two rules.

Also, the very dark shadows in the hills draw my eye and keep it there. I like that there's finally some contrast but it's a huge change from the rest of the painting making it feel unbalanced, at least to me.

I don't think the way an artist paints something is either right or wrong but I was just wondering why.

Thank you for your "brutal" honesty… I love you for that… Smile It always makes me think.

I think we have come to a road where you say you like Pizza with Pepperoni and I say I like Chicken Biryani… Smile

You are correct, the back should have been lighter value…. however I am sold on the limited value, there is no turning back… I can feel it in my bones… So let's see… I may become the next Richard Schmidt… Or a total disaster… Smile

Good, I just wanted you to be certain in your mind that you had those rules for a reason. And while I wouldn't choose Pizza with Pepperoni or Chicken Biryani (I'm a vegetarian, lol), I do think artists should paint what and how they want. If you feel limited values in your bones, then I know you'll make it work.

Does Richard Schmidt recommend limited values and temperatures?

Yes, Richard Schmidt, John F. Carlson, Kevin McPherson, Scott Burdick, to name a few, that follow this rule...

However, you were right that my value was too dark for the background and should be corrected. So the value, in the background, should have been lighter (with few changes in values) and most of the work should have been done by temperature variations. Too many things to juggle, so still trying to grapple with this.

Faisal, I like the composition, and the shapes, but I too find the large dark area in the background to be distracting. As it is further away, it might benefit from fading it a bit, or as an alternative, add the same tone to the tree shadow in the foreground. But I like your mottos/rules!

Thanks Alan for the feedback. I agree with Jan and you on the background... Much appreciated.
