PostSubject: Beginning again After Many Years ... But a First Time WSO User!   Beginning again After Many Years ... But a First Time WSO User! EmptySat Aug 06, 2016 2:58 pm

I've been reading and researching like crazy. I have lots of notes ... and many questions. For starters, it seems that I should use the WN Artisan paints to get my feet wet after many years of not painting. I transitioned from traditional oils to acrylics over the years but never really loved using acrylics because they dried too fast for me. I have always loved painting with traditional oils because of the paint consistency. From what I've read here and elsewhere, the WN Artisan brand is of a thicker consistency and more like what I loved about the consistency of traditional oils (thickness, showing the brush strokes, etc.) than the other WSO paints. Am I correct? And, INITIALLY, until I get used to painting with oils again, I want to spend less money on the WSOs so I can get back into painting mode but still make my mistakes. The WN brand is less costly than, for example, the Holbein Duo WSOs. Am I on the right track here? Thanks!!

If you like the thicker paints, W?N is a good choice to start with. If youhave any intent on using them by thinning them w ith water for under painting, they will be tacky. Be sure to use W/N WSO thinner instead for smoother application

Hi! Judy is correct - if you like stiff paint, then the W&N Artisans may be just what you need. Most of the artists who've tried them hate them though because they're sticky and I've found them to be almost unresponsive.

Some of the favorite brands among WSO users are: Holbein Duo, Cobra and I've had good success with the Lukas WSO's which are relatively inexpensive yet still of artist quality.

It's like any other artist supply, different brands will be best for different people. I'd advise that you try a tube from various manufacturers but there's even a difference between different colors of the same brand. But, I'm sure you've noticed that with both your acrylics and previous oil colors.

The good news is that you can generally learn to work around any shortcomings of your paint. Sometimes that involves using various mediums which may raise the price of the cheaper paint.

I'm sure Alan (Watermixable Guy) can advise you about the Artisans as he uses them and has learned their quirks.

Thought I'd just check in and see what's going on. Haven't been painting at all, but I sure miss it, and all of you. Take care!
