We travelled to Cuba last month, and took a very BASIC watercolour kit with us. It was a homemade travel kit, consisting of 4 colours (yellow, red, blue and brown). We had leftover watercolour tubes of various colour at our house, so we squeezed each colour into a water bottle cover, and let those dry, then taped the caps into a plastic case with cover. That was it, except for cheap dollar store brushes, and a couple of old film canisters as water containers. We painted outdoors "Plein Air" on watercolour sketch books.

Painted while sitting on the patio of our room at the resort. Probably half an hour, fortified with Mojitos, the Cuban drink of rum, cane sugar and mint leaves. The temperature was about 33 degrees celcius, or 91 F. Water dries pretty quickly, even in the shade.

The resort is located on the north coast of Cuba, about an hour from Havana. This view is from the main area, where the buffet, cigar smoking area and gift shops are located. This is a look at the guest buildings, in the late morning, already about 100F.

Love those cute, quick paintings! I love the heat, so I can't sympathize much about that. But if it's cold at all then I can complain forever. I hope you had fun.

Beautiful, Alan! It really speaks to your ability to learn that you did these with such a small w/c kit! And it looks as if you had fun!

Thanks Jan and Faisal. It was a new experience to be able to sit outside in the shade and do a quick sketch. I like watercolours for their portability and quick mixing. Here is another sketch from the same trip: from a tourist plaza in the middle of Havana. Lots of restaurants and gift shops etc. The buildings in and around the plaza are slowwwwly being restored to some of their former grandeur. Not that you can tell from this sketch, done while being visited by dogs, tourists, peddlars, and the curious.
