I think it would be interesting to know our recipes for creating black or near blacks without using black. Smile

I usually use ultramarine blue and burnt umber. The mix is about equal parts, but your can adjust to your liking.

I like that combination a lot, too.

Others that I like are:

UMBlue and raw umber
Perm alizarin crimson and pthalo green
Diox purple and thalo green

Permanent Alizarin and either viridian or phtalo green (bs) makes a nice dark, and I like the gray it makes too.

Speaking of darks, if anyone has recently bought Holbein's Duo Sepia paint, I'd be curious what it now reads on the label. Mine says NBr8 & PBk9, but on Blicks site they now list it as Pbk9, PBr6 & 7. It's one of my favorite darks that I hope it hasn't been changed.

Perm. Alizarin, Veridian Green, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Umber - these tend to find their way into one big glob of dark/black on my palette.

Can't help with the Duo Sepia, but it sounds like an interesting color.

Wow a lot of great options for making black or near black colors. Thank you for sharing! Smile

David, I don't have the Sepia either but might add it to my list of colors to try. I wonder if Dick Blick made a mistake with the pigment codes. I guess one option would be to email them I know from experience that their customer service is great. Holbein doesn't have anything on their site.

I never buy black paint so I always mix my own. I usually use whatever 3 primaries I happen to have on my palette and see what I get, adjusting as needed. When it comes to colour I'm more intuitive than methodical. It works for me. Wink

One thing to keep in mind when combining colors is, logically, your value will never be darker than the darkest pigment you're using (or brightest.)

If you're trying to get the most neutral shade, then you need to pick hues that are the most complementary of each other. In the case of ult.blue and burnt umber, b.u. tends to be somewhat reddish so I'd suggest a ult.blue green shade, otherwise your mix may wind up being a shade warmer than you'd like. In the case of wmo, I'm not sure which company supplies a Ult. blue (gs,) maybe the Duo Ult. Light. Raw umber, being a shade more greenish, would be a better match to Ult.blue red shade, which is a more common offering.

As an aside, it's also generally better to mix the darkest shade into the lightest one instead of the other way around, depending on how far apart in value they are. You tend to waste less paint that way.

Sofie, I remember having to do that in an art class and I found it really challenging to hit black but it certainly work well. Thank you for sharing! Smile

David, Good point and tips! Smile I use the Holbein Ultramarine Deep and Burnt Umber which I never really noticed if the mix is warmer it does look fairly neutral but I'll take a closer look now that you've brought it up.

Working from the darkest shade to the lightest is something that is so important I agree it saves a lot of paint. Before I started working this way I use to have mountains of paint now I just have hills. Laughing

I've never paid attention to which color I add to which. I'm curious now. I'll have to try it out.

Mirror, mirror on the wall, what's the blackest black of all? I'd vote for a mix of Phthalo Blue (RS), Phthalo Green (YS) and Alizarin Crimson. Where an especially vibrant black is needed over a large area, mix three batches of the three colors, with a different color slightly predominating in each batch. Randomly apply the batches to the area to be covered.

Jim,
Thanks for your suggestion. You have such vibrant colors in your paintings, I have to check to see one where you may have used this mixture. I'll have to try it out. I've always only used ultramarine blue and burnt umber. Your's sounds like it would be a warmer choice with the Alizarin crimson.

I've been doing a lot of swatches lately and would like to just add another one I just discovered. Winsor & Newton Olive Green with Winsor & Newton Dioxazine Purple or Holbein Dioxazine Violet. Smile
