| This is the lion I painted from the e book Jan recommended. I did it in Painter X3 using mostly digital oils. I did a small glaze to darken a few areas and I used gouache on a separate layer to add highlights and whiskers.

| Well done, Judy! Was it difficult to do digitally? The background is very abstract but the lioness is probably more realistic than the one in the book, not quite as loose. Do you have trouble painting loosely (I do!) or was it more difficult with digital brushes? Good for you just trying it but I know just about anything we can do in traditional material can be done digitally. | |

| Thanks. Yes I do have problems with painting loosely. I had to force myself to not fuss with the background. I have a digital brush from http://skipallenpaints.com/ called "worn bristle" that I used for almost all the painting. I've taken a lot of digital classes with him and he always provides a great assortment of brushes for the courses.
I think the biggest advantage of painting digitally is that I can use all my traditional techniques, but I can zoom in to do fine detail like eye highlights. I might still play with this using a different brush to make the coloring of the body looser and more impressionistic. If I do, I'll re-post it.

| I definitely have problems painting loosely but I was curious about this painting as to whether it was that Painter didn't have a way/brush to make it look like David's painting or if you just naturally drifted into realism.
It will be very interesting to me if you do re-paint it.
Went to the Skip Allen website and am looking at brushes. Just wonder how many will work with my old version of Painter IX! I definitely don't want to spend the $$$$$ for a new version especially since I wasn't all that impressed with the newer version of Paint Shop Pro that I bought. It ended up being a clone of PhotoShop Elements that I got for free with some other stuff I bought!

| I wish I had known that you might have been interested in X3. They just had it on sale on Corel for $99 but it was only for yesterday. X3 was an improved version of Painter 12, but both of those are quite different from Painter 11 which is what I started with, so there was quite a learning curve. Skip had an introductory series of courses for painter 12 through the Digital /art Academy that was what really got me using and understanding the programs. I hope you take advantage of a lot of his brushes. They are really fun to use and he if you look on his blog or youtube you will find a lot of demos using his brushes and painter.
I have several of his Buttery Oils that I use a lot and I believe they work for Painter 11. I'm sure they'll work for redoing the Lion. I guess I'll have to go give it a try.

| I don't think I'm really interested in upgrading my Painter and getting back into digital painting so it's ok that you didn't mention the sale.
I still do quick sketches in my version but don't really use it for anything else since I now have a studio and can paint with traditional media. It's not that I think traditional is better or anything, but my interests have changed, I guess.
Thanks for all your information though as I may go back to digital one day.

| That is great that you have a studio now for painting. It makes it so much easier when you don't have to keep setting up every time you feel like painting. Now that the weather is warmer again and I can paint out on the porch, I've been playing with the traditional one more. I'm not so effected with my allergies that way.
I re-did the lion on another post after your question about painting looser and I think I accomplished it. I followed his finished painting though. I'm not sure if I would have accomplished yet on my own. Realism is a had tradtion to break.
Happy Mother's day,

| Realism is a hard habit to break and I'm not sure I could do it without following the directions either!
Happy Mother's Day to you also!
